The Southern Star Paywall: How to Read Subscriber Exclusives for Free
The Southern Star in Skibbereen keeps its best West Cork reporting behind a Subscriber Exclusives gate. How the paywall works and how to read a full article.
Paywall behaviour last tested
The Southern Star is West Cork's weekly newspaper, published in Skibbereen, County Cork, by Southern Star Ltd. Founded in 1889, it is one of Ireland's long-standing independent local papers and still belongs to the region it covers rather than to a national group. Its Thursday ePaper goes live at 5am, and its website carries the week's West Cork news, GAA sport, farming and court reports between editions. The pieces that get shared most around Bandon, Clonakilty and Skibbereen, the big GAA profiles, the planning rows and the court cases, now sit in a Subscriber Exclusives section, so a reader following a link from a club WhatsApp group frequently meets the subscription prompt. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full article.
How the Southern Star paywall works
The Southern Star runs a subscriber-only section rather than a meter. General news on southernstar.ie is open to everyone, but the stories the paper considers its best work are filed under Subscriber Exclusives, and those article pages are marked subscriber-only in their metadata (the isAccessibleForFree flag is set to false). A subscription costs €8 a month on a 30-day rolling contract, or €88 a year with one month free, and it includes full website access and the Thursday ePaper.
The gate is applied in the browser. The full article text is delivered in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script then checks whether you are logged in as a subscriber and swaps the story for the subscription box if you are not. A reader that fetches the page without running that script receives the complete article. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why the way a gate is built matters more than what it is called, and the Southern Star, for all that it labels these stories exclusive, sits on the softer side of that line.
Our tests on 1 November 2026 through Skip the Paywall, all from the Subscriber Exclusives section:
- A 2,829-word Southern Star profile of Ruairí Deane, the Cork footballer who became a school principal, loaded in full, all 97 paragraphs.
- A 799-word Southern Star GAA report on Canovee targeting a Munster junior football run after winning the county title loaded in full, all 28 paragraphs.
- A 452-word Southern Star preview of Bandon's hurlers chasing the county intermediate A title loaded in full, all 17 paragraphs.
- A 344-word Southern Star planning story on the Clonakilty Park Hotel extension loaded in full, all 13 paragraphs.
Read a Southern Star article in full
- Copy the article link. Subscriber Exclusives links look like southernstar.ie/subscriber-exclusives/ followed by the headline slug and a seven-digit id, for example southernstar.ie/subscriber-exclusives/headline-slug-4379456. Open stories use their section name, such as sport or news, in place of subscriber-exclusives.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.
The reader handled the 97-paragraph Deane profile as comfortably as the 13-paragraph planning story. Match photographs and team lists in picture form do not carry across, so for a GAA report you may still want the original page for the images.
Other approaches
- Library access. Cork County Library offers newspapers online to members, and Irish public libraries generally include local and national titles in their digital services. Check with your branch.
- The ePaper. The Thursday ePaper is part of the subscription rather than a free route, but if you already pay for the print paper it is worth asking whether digital access is included.
- Related free sources. Much of what the Southern Star reports is public. Cork County Council publishes planning applications and decisions online, the courts service lists sittings, and Cork GAA and the individual clubs publish fixtures and results, though none of them will give you the paper's reporting or its interviews.
- Private windows will not help. Because the gate is a subscriber section rather than a monthly meter, there is no count to reset. A Subscriber Exclusive opened in a private window shows the same prompt.
How it compares with other Irish and local papers
Irish newspapers have taken different routes on paywalls, but the ones we have tested behave much like the Southern Star: the text is in the page and only a script hides it. The Irish Times, The Irish News in Belfast and the Irish Farmers Journal, which overlaps with the Southern Star's farming coverage, all have guides of their own. Across the water, the local weeklies are similar. KentOnline, the Iliffe group's Kent titles, and the Newsquest papers in our Oxford Mail and Northern Echo guide both work the same way. The hard cases are the big national and international titles, The Economist, the Financial Times and The New York Times, which do not work at all; our explainer on sites that cannot be read covers those. The full list of sites that work is kept current.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
A weekly paper that has covered West Cork since 1889 is a rare thing, and it survives on the people who pay for it. At €8 a month, or €88 a year with a month free, a Southern Star subscription is among the cheapest on this site, and it comes with the Thursday ePaper at 5am. If you follow the GAA, the courts or the planning files through southernstar.ie every week, subscribing is the right way to keep a reporter in Skibbereen.
