KentOnline Paywall: How to Read Kent News Articles for Free

KentOnline is the website of the Kent Messenger group, the family-owned chain of weekly papers that covers the county from Dartford to Dover. It is run by Iliffe Media, which also owns local titles across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and the East Midlands, and it is the biggest local news site in Kent by some distance. Court reports, school league tables and stories about the Channel ports draw readers from well outside the county, and those readers hit the paywall quickly. This guide explains how it works and how to read a KentOnline story in full.

How the KentOnline paywall works

KentOnline uses a metered paywall. Non-subscribers can open a limited number of articles a month, tracked in a browser cookie, before the story is replaced by a subscription prompt. Some longer features and investigations are flagged as premium and locked from the first view. Iliffe adjusts the allowance across its sites, so it is best to assume it is small.

The gate is applied in the browser. The full article is delivered in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script hides the text once you are over the limit. A crawler-style reader that never runs that script receives the whole story. This is the same approach the Newsquest local papers take, and it behaves the same way.

Our tests on 30 September 2026 through Skip the Paywall:

• A 2,784-word KentOnline feature on the county's most oversubscribed schools loaded in full, all 111 paragraphs.
• A 1,068-word KentOnline report on residents living beside a fire-damaged Folkestone hotel loaded in full, all 37 paragraphs.
• An 842-word KentOnline crime story on arrests after the same hotel fire loaded in full, all 35 paragraphs.

Read a KentOnline article in full

• Copy the article link. KentOnline links look like kentonline.co.uk/town/news/headline-slug-123456/, with the district name before the section.
• Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
• The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.

Other approaches

• Library access. Kent County Council libraries offer the Kent Messenger titles through PressReader free with a library card, and other Iliffe titles are usually available the same way in their own counties.
• Newsletters. KentOnline's free daily email carries the main stories and links.
• Private windows. The meter lives in a cookie, so a private window resets it.
• The print papers. The weekly Kent Messenger, Medway Messenger and the rest of the group are still on sale, and a print subscription includes digital access.

KentOnline and the other local news groups

Britain's local news is now split between a handful of groups, and they do not all behave the same. Iliffe's sites, like KentOnline, and Newsquest's, like The National and its regional dailies, gate in the browser and load in full. National World's titles, including The Scotsman and the Portsmouth News, block automated requests and do not work. Among the nationals, The i Paper loads in full. Subscribe if you read it regularly

Local reporting is expensive and the Kent Messenger group is one of the few family-owned regional publishers left in the country. Its digital subscription is a few pounds a month on introductory terms.
