La Vanguardia Paywall: How to Read La Vanguardia Articles for Free
La Vanguardia meters its Barcelona news, culture and technology coverage. How the Grupo Godó paywall works and how to read a full La Vanguardia article.
Paywall behaviour last tested
La Vanguardia is the Barcelona daily of Grupo Godó, published since 1881 and for most of that time the most-read newspaper in Catalonia. It appears in both Spanish and Catalan editions, covers Catalan and Spanish politics, FC Barcelona and the wider Barcelona cultural scene, and has built one of the largest online audiences of any Spanish-language paper, with strong technology and science desks and a heavy presence in Latin America. That reach means its features travel widely on social media, and a reader who follows the link often finds the article cut off beneath a subscription prompt. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full story.
How the La Vanguardia paywall works
La Vanguardia uses a metered paywall with a layer of subscriber-only pieces. Most news articles are open to everyone until a monthly limit is reached, after which the body is replaced by a prompt to subscribe, and the count is kept in a browser cookie. Longer reportage, columns and some interviews are marked for subscribers from the first visit, and as far as we can tell the Catalan edition applies the same rules.
The gate is applied in the browser. The site delivers the full article text in the page, so that Google and other search engines can index it, and a script then checks your cookie and hides the body if you are over the limit or the piece is for subscribers. A reader that fetches the page without running that script receives the complete article. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why that distinction matters.
Our tests on 17 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- A 1,224-word La Vanguardia technology feature on how artificial intelligence is pushing mathematics and science into new territory loaded in full, all 15 paragraphs.
- A 1,519-word La Vanguardia culture profile of Ángel Dust, the DJ who went to hell and came back to tell the story, loaded in full, all 16 paragraphs.
- A 536-word La Vanguardia sports column on Deco, headed "Gol de Deco", loaded in full, all 8 paragraphs.
Read a La Vanguardia article in full
- Copy the article link. La Vanguardia links look like lavanguardia.com/tecnologia/20261014/11657790/headline-slug.html, with the date and an article number before the slug.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text, without the subscription box or the photo galleries that slow the original page down.
The reader shows the article in the language it was published in, Spanish or Catalan. If you want it in English, your browser's built-in translation works on the reader page as it would on any other.
Other approaches
- Newsletters. La Vanguardia sends free email newsletters, including a daily morning briefing and themed letters on politics, culture and technology, that summarise the stories and link to them.
- Library access. La Vanguardia is available on PressReader, which many public libraries in Spain and abroad offer free to cardholders, and Catalan public libraries provide the print replica through their digital lending services.
- Private windows. The monthly meter is a cookie, so a private window resets it. Pieces marked for subscribers remain closed.
- Related free sources. The Generalitat, Barcelona city council and FC Barcelona all publish statements and documents free, and much of La Vanguardia's local reporting draws on them.
How it compares with other Spanish papers
Not every Spanish paper passes. El País does not work: elpais.com blocked every request in our 17 October 2026 tests, so there is no El País guide. The business daily Expansión returned short previews on two of three tests and is not listed. The other Spanish titles we tested the same day did load in full: El Mundo in Madrid, the digital daily El Español and the reader-funded elDiario.es. The full list of sites that work is kept current.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
La Vanguardia runs the largest newsroom in Catalonia and its bilingual edition is expensive to produce. If you read it most days for Barcelona news, Catalan politics or its technology coverage, a digital subscription is the right way to keep that work going.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns La Vanguardia?
Grupo Godó, the Barcelona media group controlled by the Godó family, which has published the paper since it was founded in 1881. The group also owns the sports daily Mundo Deportivo and the radio station RAC1.
Does the reader work on the Catalan edition?
As far as we can tell, yes. The Catalan edition is served from the same site with the same paywall script, and the reader shows the article in whichever language the link points to. Our 17 October 2026 tests used the Spanish edition.
Do sports columns count against the meter?
Yes. Columns are ordinary articles on lavanguardia.com and are metered or marked for subscribers like news reports. A 536-word sports column loaded in full in our test.
