El Mundo Paywall: How to Read El Mundo Articles for Free
El Mundo marks its best reporting, columns and Papel features as Premium. How the Unidad Editorial paywall works and how to read a full El Mundo article.
Paywall behaviour last tested
El Mundo is the Madrid daily published by Unidad Editorial, the Spanish arm of Italy's RCS MediaGroup, which also owns the business paper Expansión and the sports daily Marca. Founded in 1989, it is one of the two or three most-read general newspapers in Spain and is known for investigative reporting, a combative opinion page and the long-form weekend features of its Papel supplement. Its most-shared stories, the exclusives on national politics, the big interviews and the columnists, are the ones most often marked Premium, so a reader arriving from social media or a search result frequently meets the subscription prompt. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full article.
How the El Mundo paywall works
El Mundo runs a freemium paywall with a meter on top. Breaking news and agency copy are generally open to everyone. Articles labelled Premium, which include most columns, interviews, investigations and Papel features, are reserved for subscribers, and as far as we can tell non-subscribers also hit a monthly limit on the number of articles they can open before a prompt appears. The count is stored in a browser cookie.
The gate is enforced in the browser. The article text is delivered in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script then checks whether you are a subscriber or over your limit and swaps the body for the subscription box. A reader that fetches the page without running that script receives the complete article. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why that distinction matters, and El Mundo sits firmly on the softer side of it.
Our tests on 17 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- A 3,317-word El Mundo Papel interview with Cristina Llanos, the singer of Dover, breaking ten years of silence, loaded in full, all 10 long paragraphs.
- A 449-word El Mundo opinion column on the irony of Spain's self-styled authentic left loaded in full, all 9 paragraphs.
- A 1,179-word El Mundo film report on Penélope Cruz and her possible double Oscar nomination loaded in full, all 7 paragraphs.
Read an El Mundo article in full
- Copy the article link. El Mundo links look like elmundo.es/cultura/cine/2026/10/12/ followed by a long alphanumeric id and .html, and Papel pieces sit under elmundo.es/papel/.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.
The reader shows the article in Spanish, exactly as El Mundo published it. If you want it in English, your browser's built-in translation works on the reader page in the normal way.
Other approaches
- Newsletters. El Mundo sends free email bulletins, including a morning briefing and section newsletters, that summarise the day's stories and link to them.
- Library access. El Mundo is carried on PressReader, which many public libraries in Spain, the UK and North America offer free to cardholders, and the print replica is also available through Kiosko y Más.
- Private windows. The monthly meter lives in a cookie, so a private window resets it, though Premium-only pieces stay closed.
- Related free sources. Spanish government statements, court rulings from the CGPJ and congressional records are published free, and much of El Mundo's political reporting can be checked against them.
How it compares with other Spanish papers
El Mundo's main rivals behave differently. El País does not work: elpais.com blocked every request in our 17 October 2026 tests, so there is no El País guide. Expansión, El Mundo's sister business paper, returned short previews on two of three tests and is not listed. The other Spanish dailies we tested that day did pass: La Vanguardia in Barcelona, the digital daily El Español, founded by El Mundo's own first editor Pedro J. Ramírez, and the reader-funded elDiario.es. The full list of sites that work is kept current.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
El Mundo employs one of the largest newsrooms in Spain and funds investigations that take months. If you read its columns and Papel features every week, a digital subscription, which is often discounted for the first year, is the right way to keep that reporting going.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns El Mundo?
Unidad Editorial, the Spanish publishing group controlled by RCS MediaGroup of Italy. The same group publishes Expansión and Marca, and El Mundo shares its subscription system with Expansión.
Does the reader work on Premium articles?
Yes. All three articles in our 17 October 2026 tests, including a long Papel interview and an opinion column, loaded in full. Premium articles carry their text in the page and are hidden by a script, which the reader does not run.
Does it work on El País too?
No. El País blocked every request in our 17 October 2026 tests, so it is not on the list of supported sites. El Mundo, La Vanguardia, El Español and elDiario.es all passed on the same day.
