Sports Business Journal Paywall: How to Read SBJ Articles for Free
Sports Business Journal keeps its reporting on leagues, media rights and venues behind a subscriber paywall. How the gate works and how to read a full story.
Paywall behaviour last tested
Sports Business Journal is the trade paper of the sports industry. Published by Leaders Group out of Charlotte, it covers media rights deals, franchise sales, stadium financing, sponsorship and the executives who move between leagues and teams. It is where news about a new broadcast contract or an expansion bid usually appears first, and it is priced for the people who make those deals rather than the fans who follow them. This guide explains how its paywall works and how to read an SBJ article in full.
The audience is league and team staff, agencies, broadcasters and the journalists who cover them. Most people who hit the paywall are not regular readers; they have followed a link about their own club, a stadium vote or a labour dispute and want that one story.
How the Sports Business Journal paywall works
SBJ uses a subscriber paywall with very little free content. A non-subscriber who opens an article sees the headline and the opening lines before the body is replaced by a prompt to subscribe or sign in. There is no meaningful monthly allowance, and the daily newsletter editions are gated the same way. Subscriptions are sold to individuals and, more often, as group licences to teams, leagues and agencies.
The gate is applied in the browser. SBJ wants search engines to index every story so that a search for a deal or an executive finds it, so the full article text is delivered in the page HTML. A script then checks your login and hides the text if you are not a subscriber. A crawler-style reader that never runs that script receives the complete article.
Our tests on 5 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- A 2,564-word Sports Business Journal ranking of minor-league markets, led by Greenville-Spartanburg, loaded in full, all 63 paragraphs.
- A 1,175-word Sports Business Journal column offering an optimistic view of baseball's labour negotiations loaded in full, all 15 paragraphs.
- A 1,062-word Sports Business Journal analysis of what a baseball work stoppage would cost the sport loaded in full, all 22 paragraphs.
Read a Sports Business Journal article in full
- Copy the article link. SBJ links look like sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2026/09/24/headline-slug/, sometimes with a newsletter or issue parameter attached.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article. The extra parameters do not matter.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body text.
The daily newsletter landing pages, which list several items on one page, are not single articles, so paste the link to the story you want rather than the edition.
Other approaches
- Free newsletters. SBJ's morning and closing bell emails carry headlines and a paragraph on each story, which is often enough.
- Employer access. Many teams, leagues and agencies hold group licences, so a work email address may already have a login.
- Trade coverage elsewhere. Front Office Sports and the sports desks of the business press often follow SBJ's reporting within a day.
- Student rates. SBJ offers reduced subscriptions for students in sport management programmes.
How it compares with other trade titles
SBJ behaves like the other professional trade publications we have tested. Law.com and The Wrap both gate in the browser and load in full. On the sports side, Defector works, while The Athletic blocks automated requests and does not. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why that difference matters, and the full list of sites that work is kept up to date.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
Sports Business Journal is a specialist newsroom that depends on subscriptions rather than advertising. If you work in the industry and read it daily, a subscription or a group licence through your employer is the right way to support the reporting you rely on.

Frequently asked questions
Does Sports Business Journal have any free articles?
Very few. Most stories are locked from the first view, although the free newsletters summarise the day’s reporting and the site occasionally opens a feature to everyone.
Does the reader work on the SBJ daily newsletter pages?
The newsletter editions list several items on one page and are not single articles, so the reader may return only part of them. Paste the link to an individual story instead.
Does the reader work on The Athletic?
No. The Athletic blocks automated requests, so the reader cannot fetch its pages. Sports Business Journal sends the full article and loads in full.
