That model works because readers pay: the site has a subscriber paywall that kicks in after a few free articles, and there is no advertising to speak of. Its long interviews, blogs and the occasional 3,000-word piece about a tennis broadcaster get shared far beyond the subscriber base, which is where the meter bites. How the Defector paywall works
Defector runs a metered subscriber paywall. A visitor who is not logged in can read a small number of free articles a month, after which the text is replaced by a subscription panel. The site is open about its reliance on subscriptions and the allowance is deliberately low. The count lives in a cookie.
Defector, like the magazines it competes with for attention, needs its articles indexed by search engines and previewed properly on social media. So the complete article is present in the page, and the paywall is applied by a script in the browser after the page loads. A crawler-style reader that never runs the script receives the full text. Sports coverage, the culture and food sections, and the site's longer features all load the same way. The subscriber-only podcasts and the comment section are not part of the article and are not available through the reader.
Other approaches
- Free newsletter. Defector's email newsletter is free and links to the day's pieces, but it does not carry them in full.
- Private windows. The meter is cookie-based, so a private window resets it. The allowance is small, so this is a stopgap.
- Subscription tiers. Defector's cheapest tier is modest and unlocks the whole site; the higher tiers add the comment section and podcasts.
- Library access. Defector is online-only and not available through library services such as PressReader.
How it compares with other sports and culture sites
Defector loads in full, as do the big general-interest magazines: The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Vulture, and Slate. The Athletic, the biggest subscription sports site, does not work because it blocks automated requests.
