New York Magazine meters Intelligencer, Vulture, The Cut, Grub Street and the Strategist under one paywall. Here is how it works and how to read the full article on any of them.

New York Magazine is really six publications in one. Intelligencer covers politics and business, Vulture covers entertainment, The Cut covers style and culture, Grub Street covers food, the Strategist covers shopping, and the magazine itself publishes the long features. Since 2018 all of them have shared one metered paywall on nymag.com. If you have used up your free reads on a Vulture recap and then found Intelligencer locked as well, that is why.
How the New York Magazine paywall works
New York Magazine, owned by Vox Media, uses a metered paywall that counts articles across all of its verticals together. Readers without a subscription get a small number of free articles a month, tracked in a cookie, before the body is hidden behind a subscription offer.
The full article is delivered in the page for search engines, and the paywall is applied afterwards by a script in the browser. A reader that fetches the page the way a crawler does never runs that script. Read a New York Magazine article in full
- Copy the article link from nymag.com. Intelligencer, Vulture, The Cut and Grub Street links all begin with nymag.com followed by the vertical's name.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The article appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body.
What works and what does not
- Features, news, recaps and reviews load completely.
- Vulture recaps are long and text-heavy and read well in the reader.
- The Strategist shopping pages are product lists with price widgets; you get the written recommendations but not live prices.
- The Approval Matrix and other graphics are images and do not translate to text.
- The print magazine archive on Google Books is a separate product and unaffected.
Sister sites
Vox Media also owns The Verge, which loads in full, and Vox, which is free. It does not own The New Yorker, which readers sometimes confuse with New York Magazine; that is a Condé Nast title with its own meter, and it also works with the reader.
