The Advocate is Louisiana's largest newspaper, based in Baton Rouge and published in editions for New Orleans and for Acadiana. It covers the state capitol, LSU, the petrochemical corridor along the Mississippi and the hurricanes that shape life in the state. Since 2019 it has been part of Georges Media, which also owns The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com, and the three sites share one newsroom and one paywall. Readers following a legislative session, a Tigers game or a storm from outside the state hit the paywall quickly. This guide explains how it works and how to read an Advocate story in full.
How The Advocate paywall works
The Advocate uses a metered paywall. Non-subscribers can open a limited number of stories a month, tracked in a browser cookie, before the article body is replaced by a subscription prompt. Some pieces, particularly investigations and columns, are marked as subscriber-only and gate on the first view. The Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Acadiana editions publish on theadvocate.com, and NOLA.com runs on the same platform with a separate meter.
The gate is applied in the browser. The complete article is delivered in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script hides the text once the cookie says you are over the limit. A crawler-style reader that never runs the script receives the whole story.
Our tests on 30 September 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- An 848-word Advocate Curious Louisiana feature on why so many people in the state back into parking spaces loaded in full, all 34 paragraphs.
- An 821-word Advocate report on Baton Rouge Police moving a precinct downtown after a Metro Council vote loaded in full, all 29 paragraphs.
Read an Advocate article in full
- Copy the article link. Advocate links look like theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/headline-slug/article_ID.html. Trailing fragments such as #tncms-source added by the site's own links do not matter.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body text.
Other approaches
- Library access. East Baton Rouge Parish Library and other Louisiana library systems offer The Advocate through a digital newsstand with a library card, and keep the archive on microfilm and in databases.
- Newsletters. The Advocate's free morning newsletter carries a full briefing and links to the day's stories.
- Private windows. The meter is cookie-based, so a private window resets it.
- Introductory offers. Georges Media runs regular discounted digital trials, and a subscription includes the e-edition.
The Advocate and NOLA.com compared
Because they share an owner and a platform, The Advocate and NOLA.com behave identically: both meter in the browser and both load in full. Further afield, the Kansas City Star and the Post and Courier in Charleston work the same way. The Gannett papers in Louisiana, including the Shreveport Times and the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, block automated requests and do not work.
