Telegraph-Journal Paywall: How to Read New Brunswick News for Free

The Telegraph-Journal locks most of its New Brunswick reporting behind a subscriber paywall on tj.news. How the gate works and how to read a full story.

Paywall behaviour last tested

The Telegraph-Journal is New Brunswick's provincial daily, published in Saint John and read across the province for its coverage of the legislature, the courts and the fisheries and forestry industries that drive the local economy. It was the flagship of Brunswick News, the Irving family's newspaper group, until Postmedia bought the titles in 2022. Since then the Telegraph-Journal, the Fredericton Daily Gleaner and the Moncton Times & Transcript have been published together on one site, tj.news, and that site is one of the more tightly locked in Canada. This guide explains how its paywall works and how to read a full article.

How the Telegraph-Journal paywall works

The Telegraph-Journal uses a subscriber paywall. Rather than offering a monthly allowance of free stories, tj.news marks most of its reporting as subscriber-only from the first visit. A non-subscriber sees the headline and the opening lines, then a prompt to sign in or buy a digital subscription. The same subscription covers all three New Brunswick dailies.

Despite the strict policy, the gate is applied in the browser. The site delivers the full article text in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script then hides the body for anyone without a subscriber cookie. A crawler-style reader that fetches the page the way a search engine does, without running that script, receives the complete story. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls covers why that difference matters.

Our tests on 5 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:

  • A 1,729-word Telegraph-Journal report on whether New Brunswick could exclude Americans from its moose and fishing licence draws loaded in full, all 64 paragraphs.
  • A 1,111-word Telegraph-Journal story on Fredericton police promising transparency after botched murder cases loaded in full, all 32 paragraphs.
  • A 738-word Telegraph-Journal business story on a sandwich chain eyeing Quispamsis for a new restaurant loaded in full, all 23 paragraphs.

Read a Telegraph-Journal article in full

  • Copy the article link. Links look like tj.news/region/headline-slug, with the region being a New Brunswick area such as new-brunswick, saint-john-south or fredericton-west.
  • Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
  • The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body text.

Links from the Daily Gleaner and the Times & Transcript use the same tj.news domain, so they work the same way.

Other approaches

  • Library access. The New Brunswick Public Library Service offers digital newspaper access through PressReader with a library card, and the province's university libraries carry the Telegraph-Journal archive.
  • Newsletters. The free daily newsletter carries headlines and short summaries with links to the day's stories.
  • Introductory offers. Postmedia runs frequent low-cost trial subscriptions for new digital readers.
  • Private windows. Because the gate is applied from the first visit rather than by a meter, a private window does not help here.

How it compares with other Atlantic Canadian papers

The Telegraph-Journal is one of two big Atlantic Canadian news groups our readers paste. The other, SaltWire, covers Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and also loads in full. Postmedia's national titles behave the same way: see our guides to the National Post and the Postmedia city papers. Further west, the Winnipeg Free Press works too. The full list of sites that work is kept up to date.

Subscribe if you read it regularly

New Brunswick is a small province with a single daily newspaper group, and the Telegraph-Journal's reporting on provincial politics, health care and the courts has no real substitute. If you read it most days, a digital subscription is the fair way to keep that reporting going, and it covers all three New Brunswick dailies.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Telegraph-Journal still owned by the Irvings?

No. Brunswick News, the Irving family group that published the Telegraph-Journal, sold its newspapers to Postmedia in 2022. The New Brunswick dailies now appear together on tj.news.

Do the Daily Gleaner and Times & Transcript work too?

Yes. All three New Brunswick dailies are published on the same tj.news site with the same paywall, so links from any of them open in the reader in the same way.

Does the Telegraph-Journal give any free articles?

Most stories on tj.news are marked subscriber-only from the first visit rather than metered, so a non-subscriber usually sees only the opening lines. The reader fetches the full text that the site delivers for search engines.
