Skift's audience is professional, which is why its subscription is priced like a trade publication rather than a magazine. Most readers arrive from a link in a newsletter or a colleague's message, read one story and hit the meter a week later on the next one. That pattern, a few articles spread across a month, is exactly the one the meter is designed to catch.

How the Skift paywall works

Skift runs a metered paywall on its daily news. Non-subscribers get a limited number of free articles in a rolling period, counted in a browser cookie, before the article body is replaced by a subscription prompt. Skift does not publish the exact allowance and adjusts it from time to time. Alongside the news, Skift sells Skift Pro, a higher-priced tier that bundles the news with its research reports, data and event access. The important detail for readers is where the gate is applied. Skift needs Google to index every story so that travel searches find it, so the complete article is delivered in the page HTML. • The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.

Skift Pro research reports are separate downloads for subscribers and are not on the public site, so they cannot be read this way. The daily news, analysis pieces and columns are what loads.

Other approaches

• Newsletters. Skift's free daily newsletter carries summaries of the day's stories and links, and a lot of the value is in the summaries themselves.
• Private windows. The meter lives in a cookie, so a private or incognito window resets it. The allowance is small, so this only goes so far.
• Company subscriptions. Many travel companies hold a team subscription. If you work in the sector, ask whoever manages research or communications whether one exists.
• Free podcasts. Skift's podcasts are not gated and cover much of the same ground as its features.
