The Press Democrat Paywall: How to Read Santa Rosa News for Free

The Press Democrat meters its site and locks Sonoma County news after a few stories. How the Santa Rosa paper gates its reporting, and how to read a full story.

Paywall behaviour last tested

The Press Democrat is the daily newspaper of Santa Rosa and the main source of news for Sonoma County and California's North Bay wine country. It won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2017 wildfires and is owned locally by Sonoma Media Investments, which also runs the Petaluma Argus-Courier, the Sonoma Index-Tribune and several smaller North Bay titles. It is also a paywalled paper, and a link to a fire update, a court case or a high-school game shared from outside the county runs into the subscription prompt quickly. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full story.

How the Press Democrat paywall works

The Press Democrat uses a metered paywall. Non-subscribers can open a limited number of articles a month, counted in a browser cookie, before the article body is replaced by a subscription offer. Some stories are flagged as subscriber-only and locked from the first view, and breaking public-safety coverage is sometimes opened to everyone during an emergency.

The gate is applied in the browser rather than on the server. The paper delivers the complete article in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script then hides the text once your allowance is used. A reader that fetches the page the way a crawler does, without running that script, receives the whole story.

Our tests on 2 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:

  • A 1,433-word Press Democrat report on a driver's arrest after a bus collision linked to a deadly news-helicopter crash loaded in full, all 43 paragraphs.
  • A 1,051-word Press Democrat high-school football preview of Casa Grande against Rancho Cotate loaded in full, all 56 paragraphs.
  • A 303-word Press Democrat news brief identifying a cyclist killed in a hit-and-run near Graton loaded in full, all 10 paragraphs.

Read a Press Democrat article in full

  • Copy the article link. Press Democrat links look like pressdemocrat.com/2026/10/01/headline-slug/, and the Argus-Courier and Index-Tribune follow the same pattern on their own domains.
  • Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
  • The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body text.

Other approaches

  • Library access. Sonoma County Library offers the Press Democrat through its digital newspaper service, free with a library card, and the e-edition is available through PressReader at many California libraries.
  • Newsletters. The paper's free morning newsletter carries a summary of the day's top stories with links.
  • Private windows. The meter is cookie-based, so a private window resets it. Subscriber-only stories stay locked.
  • Introductory offers. Like most metro papers, the Press Democrat runs frequent low-cost introductory subscriptions.

Northern California papers compared

The Press Democrat behaves like the metered Bay Area papers we have tested. The Mercury News and its MediaNews sister titles load in full, and so does the Los Angeles Times further south. The San Francisco Chronicle is the exception: it enforces its paywall on the server and returns only a short preview, so it does not work. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out the difference, and the full list of sites that work is kept current.

Subscribe if you read it regularly

The Press Democrat is one of the few locally owned metro dailies left in California, and its wildfire coverage showed what a well-staffed local newsroom can do. If you follow Sonoma County news every week, a subscription is the honest way to keep that reporting going, and it is cheaper than most national titles.

Frequently asked questions

How many free articles does The Press Democrat allow?

The paper does not publish a fixed allowance and adjusts it from time to time. Most readers see the subscription prompt after a handful of stories in a month, and some stories are subscriber-only from the first view.

Does the reader work on the Petaluma Argus-Courier and Sonoma Index-Tribune?

They are published by the same company on the same platform, so they should behave the same way. Only the Press Democrat was tested, so paste a link and check.

Why does the San Francisco Chronicle not work when the Press Democrat does?

The Chronicle applies its paywall on the server and sends only a preview of each article, while the Press Democrat sends the full text and hides it in the browser. The reader can only show what the publisher actually sends.

Skip the Paywall is an independent reader tool and is not affiliated with any publication mentioned. Paywall behaviour changes over time; the notes above reflect our testing at the time of publication. If you read a publication regularly, please consider subscribing to support its journalism.
