How to Read Newsday Without a Subscription

Newsday is the daily newspaper for Long Island and one of the largest-circulation papers in the country. It covers Nassau and Suffolk counties in a depth no other outlet attempts, from school boards and property taxes to the Islanders and the LIRR, and its investigations regularly set the agenda in Albany. It also has a reputation for one of the strictest paywalls of any American daily. If you have clicked a Newsday link from a search result and hit a subscription screen on the first visit, this guide explains why and how to read the full story.

How the Newsday paywall works

Newsday uses a metered paywall with a very low allowance. Non-subscribers get only a small number of free articles, and in some periods the paper has effectively required a subscription from the first story. The count is stored in a browser cookie, and once it is exhausted the article body is replaced with a prompt to subscribe. The paper does not publish the exact number, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as a guess.

Despite the tight meter, the underlying mechanism is the same one most metered papers use. The complete article is present in the page so search engines can index it, and a script in your browser applies the gate. A crawler-style reader retrieves the whole text. Read a Newsday story in full

• Copy the article link. Newsday links look like newsday.com/section/headline-slug-xxxxxxxx.
• Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
• The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and body text.

Other approaches

• Library access. Many Nassau and Suffolk public libraries provide free digital access to Newsday for cardholders, often including the e-edition. Given how tight the meter is, this is by far the best free option for anyone on Long Island.
• Private windows. The meter is cookie-based, so a private window resets it, but with so few free reads this buys very little.
• The e-edition. The print replica is subscriber-only, except where a library provides it.

Newsday's tight paywall reflects a deliberate bet on subscriptions rather than advertising, and that revenue pays for a newsroom that still covers every town on the Island. Introductory digital offers are usually a dollar a week or less. If you read it daily, that is the right way to keep it going.
