La Dépêche du Midi Paywall: How to Read La Dépêche Articles for Free
La Dépêche du Midi marks much of its Toulouse and Occitanie reporting as réservé aux abonnés. How the paywall works and how to read a full La Dépêche article.
Paywall behaviour last tested
La Dépêche du Midi is the regional daily of Toulouse and the south-west of France. Founded in 1870, it is the flagship of Groupe La Dépêche, long controlled by the Baylet family, and it covers the city of Toulouse and the départements of Occitanie: Haute-Garonne, Tarn, Ariège, Aveyron, Gers, Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne, Aude, Hautes-Pyrénées and Lot-et-Garonne. Its reporting runs from the prefecture and Toulouse Métropole to village restaurants in the Tarn, and a growing share of it carries the label réservé aux abonnés, so a reader arriving from a search result or a shared link often meets a subscription prompt in place of the story. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full article.
How the La Dépêche paywall works
La Dépêche runs a freemium paywall. Breaking news, agency copy and the short l'essentiel summary at the top of each article are open to everyone. The reporting beneath them, the témoignages features, the interviews and the local investigations are marked réservé aux abonnés, and ladepeche.fr asks you to log in or subscribe before showing the rest of the text.
The gate is enforced in the browser. Each article page declares isAccessibleForFree as false in its schema.org data, which is the publisher telling search engines that the text is in the page but restricted. The full article is delivered so that Google can index it, and a script then checks whether you are a subscriber and swaps the body for the subscription box. A reader that fetches the page without running that script receives the complete article. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why that distinction matters, and La Dépêche sits firmly on the softer side of it.
Our tests on 24 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- A 326-word La Dépêche report on the 24 October demonstration in Toulouse, with the prefecture of Haute-Garonne and the two unions behind the march settling on a route further from the city centre, loaded in full, all 6 paragraphs.
- A 708-word La Dépêche témoignages feature on Le Bon Temps in Valence-d'Albigeois, the Tarn restaurant famous for its tête de veau that may close as Jérôme Rivals retires after 40 years without finding a buyer, loaded in full, all 10 paragraphs.
- A 526-word La Dépêche interview with Laurence Katzenmayer, the new president of Toulouse Métropole Habitat, who promises a billion euros of investment by 2032, loaded in full, all 13 paragraphs.
Read a La Dépêche article in full
- Copy the article link. La Dépêche links look like ladepeche.fr/2026/10/22/ followed by a slug, a numeric id and .php.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.
The reader shows the article in French, exactly as La Dépêche published it. If you want it in English, your browser's built-in translation works on the reader page in the normal way.
Other approaches
- Newsletters. La Dépêche sends free email newsletters for Toulouse and each département that summarise the day's stories and link to them.
- Public broadcasters. France 3 Occitanie and the local ici radio stations publish their regional news free online and cover most of the big stories La Dépêche reports.
- Library access. Many French public libraries offer cardholders free access to a digital press service that carries the regional dailies.
- Related free sources. The prefecture of Haute-Garonne, Toulouse Métropole and the regional council publish their decisions and communiqués free, and much of La Dépêche's local political reporting can be checked against them.
How it compares with other French sites
La Dépêche passed cleanly, and the results from other French publishers are mixed. Le Monde does not work: it serves teasers only. Nice-Matin blocks the reader outright. L'Humanité returned only flagged previews in our 24 October 2026 tests, so it is not listed. The geopolitics magazine Revue Conflits works. The full list of sites that work is kept current, and our guide to sites that cannot be bypassed explains what to do about the rest.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
La Dépêche keeps local reporters in ten départements, covering councils, courts, markets and rugby clubs that no Paris paper follows. If you read it every day, a digital subscription is the right way to keep that reporting going.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns La Dépêche du Midi?
Groupe La Dépêche, the Toulouse media group long controlled by the Baylet family. La Dépêche du Midi was founded in 1870 and is the flagship of the group, covering Toulouse and the départements of Occitanie.
Does the reader work on articles marked réservé aux abonnés?
Yes. All three articles in our 24 October 2026 tests, including a 708-word témoignages feature from the Tarn, loaded in full. The article pages carry the text and hide it with a script, which the reader does not run.
Does it work on Le Monde or Nice-Matin too?
No. Le Monde serves teasers only and Nice-Matin blocks the reader, so neither is listed. L'Humanité returned only flagged previews on 24 October 2026. Among French titles, Revue Conflits works and has its own guide.
