De Limburger Paywall: How to Read De Limburger Articles for Free
De Limburger, the regional daily for Dutch Limburg, marks much of its local reporting Premium. How the Mediahuis paywall works and how to read a full article.
Paywall behaviour last tested
De Limburger is the daily newspaper of Dutch Limburg, the long southern province that runs from Venlo down to Maastricht. It is the paper of record for the region's councils, courts, football clubs and carnival, and for most towns in the province it is the only outlet with a reporter on the ground. The paper is owned by Mediahuis, the Belgian group that also publishes NRC and De Telegraaf, and limburger.nl is built on the same platform as its sister titles. Local stories are the ones people share in Limburg WhatsApp groups and on Facebook, and a large share of them now carry a Premium label, so a reader following a link often meets the subscription prompt. This guide explains how the paywall works and how to read a full article.
How the De Limburger paywall works
De Limburger runs a freemium paywall. Breaking news, agency copy and short items are open to everyone. Articles labelled Premium, which include most court reporting, interviews, background pieces and anything with a reporter's byline, are reserved for subscribers, and limburger.nl asks you to log in or take a trial before showing them.
The gate is enforced in the browser. The article text is delivered in the page so that search engines can index it, and a script then checks whether you are logged in and swaps the body for the subscription box. A reader that fetches the page without running that script receives the complete article. Our explainer on metered versus hard paywalls sets out why that distinction matters, and De Limburger sits firmly on the softer side of it.
Our tests on 20 October 2026 through Skip the Paywall:
- A 568-word De Limburger court report on a suspect kept in custody over 78 kilos of cocaine found in Venlo, while his partner awaits trial at liberty, loaded in full, all 22 paragraphs.
- A 602-word De Limburger Maastricht story on the residents of La Valence returning home loaded in full, all 21 paragraphs.
- A 624-word De Limburger Peel en Maas report on a woman unable to continue her dog centre in Kessel after protests from neighbours loaded in full, all 23 paragraphs.
Read a De Limburger article in full
- Copy the article link. De Limburger links look like limburger.nl/regio/venlo/venlo/ or limburger.nl/regio/maastricht/ followed by a slug and a numeric id ending in .html.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press Read Article.
- The story appears in a clean reader view with the headline, byline and full text.
The reader shows the article in Dutch, exactly as De Limburger published it. If you want it in English, your browser's built-in translation works on the reader page in the normal way.
Other approaches
- Newsletters. De Limburger sends free email bulletins for the province and for individual regions that summarise the day's stories and link to them.
- Regional broadcaster. L1, the public broadcaster for Limburg, publishes its news free online and covers many of the same council, court and sports stories.
- Library access. Public libraries in Limburg commonly give cardholders reading access to the paper, either on the premises or through a digital newspaper service.
- Related free sources. Municipal council documents, court rulings on rechtspraak.nl and police statements are published free, and much of De Limburger's local reporting draws on them.
How it compares with other Dutch papers
De Limburger and its Mediahuis stablemate NRC both pass, and so does the investigative site Follow the Money. The picture elsewhere is weaker. De Volkskrant, De Telegraaf and Trouw have not passed our tests, and FD.nl served only teasers on 17 October 2026. The full list of sites that work is kept current, and our guide to sites that cannot be bypassed explains what to do about the rest.
Subscribe if you read it regularly
De Limburger is the only daily that sends reporters to every council chamber and courtroom in the province, and that kind of local journalism has few other funders. If you read it every day, a digital subscription, which is usually discounted at first, is the right way to keep it going.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns De Limburger?
Mediahuis, the Belgian newspaper group that also publishes NRC and De Telegraaf in the Netherlands. De Limburger shares its website platform and subscription system with its sister titles.
Does the reader work on Premium articles?
Yes. All three articles in our 20 October 2026 tests, including a court report and two local features, loaded in full. Premium articles carry their text in the page and are hidden by a script, which the reader does not run.
Does it work on other Dutch regional papers?
De Limburger is the only Dutch regional daily on the list at the moment. Of the national titles, NRC and Follow the Money work, while de Volkskrant, De Telegraaf and Trouw have not passed and FD.nl served only teasers.
